It is indeed the first day of another year…Happy New Year to everyone across the World!!! It’s a wonderful privilege to see this new year by the Grace of God & His mercies.

On this first day, most of us come up with a list of New Year’s resolutions which read like a sort of global to-do list. We resolve to change our diets, exercise more, study harder, give both our services and money more to our church and community, travel to new places or finish a big creative project. We resolve to be better by doing more.

My desire though, is to see us, as believers, change our focus and tilt it more on the most important thing that connects us; especially as believers; LOVE.

Yes yes I know, songs have been sang, Sermons preached and rhymes spoken about Love. But this New Year we need to view Love from a different perspective. Probably what we’ve been hearing, speaking and claiming about it; but less practised, unfortunately!

But why LOVE???

The number 16 symbolises Love. There are 16 Names of God in the Old Testament that signify His steadfast love to the children of Israel.

We as believers are not meant to be perfected in God’s Love by physically obeying the given Ten Commandments, but also by obeying the spiritual INTENT of God’s Laws:

  1. Jesus said unto him,“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
  2. This is the first and great commandment.
  3. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
  4. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

               (Matt.22:37-40, KJV)

This duality of spiritual love is signified by 8+8=16

The 16th time the word “love” is used in 1John, it says “There is no fear in love…”   (1Jn.4:18, NKJV)

In 1Corinthians 13, the Apostle Paul says Sixteen things about the quality of Love:

1• Love suffers Long.

2• Love is Kind.

3• Love does not envy.

4• Love doesn’t parade itself.

5• Love is not puffed up.

6• Love doesn’t behave rudely.

7• Love doesn’t seek its own.

8• Love is not provoked.

9• Love thinks no evil.

10• Love doesn’t rejoice in evil.

11• Love rejoices in the truth.

12• Love bears all things.

13• Love believes all things.

14• Love hopes all things.

15• Love endures all things.

             (1Corinthians 13:4-8 paraphrased)

So this New Year, Love new…Love better; Love more…Love big…Love greater!!!

Happy New Year, 2016!!!
